Polish Spirit was a project that took over 50 years to come to fruition. That's how long it took before the author felt ready to write precisely what he wanted to say, pulling no punches and giving no quarter.

Born in Warsaw in 1917, Wladek was a conscript in the Polish Air Force doing his National Service at the outbreak of WWII.  A few days after Germany invaded, the Russians poured in from the east, and it was by them that Wladek's unit, along with many of their compatriots, was captured. Restrained from telling this moving story earlier, out of consideration for family still living in what was for so long Soviet-dominated Poland, it is the remarkable war memoir of my stupendous father-in-law Wladek Wojcik.

Polish Spirit follows him into imprisonment, firstly in Eastern Ukraine and then up to the extreme rigours of the Soviet Arctic Gulags in the Komi SSR, a harsh and unforgiving regime from which very many Poles never returned. And those that did came back changed by their experiences.

As a member of the forces, though, Wladek was luckier than many. After Stalin changed sides, Wladek was eventually 'amnestied' to join General Anders' forces, and the book travels with him half way round the world until he is eventually able to fight on the European mainland for the destruction of Nazism and the liberation of his beloved country.

Recruitment to General Anders' Army, USSR, 1942

The world, however, knows the bitter irony of that last comment. The Poles, who, fought perhaps more gallantly than any to win the war, went on to lose the peace as their country was handed back to the despised Russians by their erstwhile allies, the iron curtain came down and the long years of the cold war set in. By the way, there was one allied nation not invited to join in the victory parades in London; arguably the nation who had suffered the most, and fought the hardest - the Poles.

Wladek writes movingly of the endless difficulties endured by Poles in the UK after the war, when communist-dominated Trades Unions put every obstacle in the way of them finding work; and when they had to confront the heart-rending dilemma of either abandoning loved ones in Poland, or returning to the Soviet yoke, the weight and oppression of which they already knew too well.

Far from being the usual boring memoir of some senior officer rattling his medals, this is the story of turbulent times seen from the underside by an ordinary serviceman, but an extraordinary man. An intensely personal story, often irreverent, frequently funny, occasionally angry, Polish Spirit tells how it felt to live through all this, determined to survive, determined to succeed, determined to show the world the meaning of the words 'Polish Spirit'.

Wladek died, after a long illness, on 15th November 2000. He is the only true hero I have ever known.

This book, originally published during his lifetime by his family, is his testimony. If, after reading it, you don't think it's worth the price, I'll not quibble, but will return your money. After six years, no-one's taken us up on this offer yet.

Another no-strings offer we can make; please be our guest for a free sample chapter.

Following numerous requests over the past few years, it is now hoped to bring out a Polish language edition of Polish Spirit in the future. However, this project is proceeding very slowly, and the prolonged holding of breath is usually considered medically inadvisable!

The Kresy-Siberia Group

To quote from their site's home page:

The "Kresy-Siberia Group" brings into contact people from countries around the world with a special interest in the tragedy of the 1.7 million Polish citizens of various faiths and ethnicities (Polish, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish, etc.) deported from eastern Poland (Kresy) in 1940-42 to special labour camps in Siberia, Kazakhstan and Soviet Asia.   Some 115,000 of these were evacuated through Persia in 1942 as soldiers of Anders Army and their families - and eventually made their way to the West.   The circumstances of their odyssey and the tragic history of   the Polish citizens under Soviet occupation during the war was hushed up by the Allies during the war to protect the reputation of the Soviet Union, an important ally in the war against the Nazis.

Sixty years later the survivors have aged and many have died.   With this list we hope to bring together surviving deportees and their descendants to remember, learn, discover and spread the word of their ordeal to the world and to future generations.

If this list can play even a small role in that effort, it will have been an important achievement.

A Forgotten Odyssey

'A Forgotten Odyssey' is the title of a recent documentary film by Jagna Wright and Aneta Naszynska. It deals with the forgotten tragedy of 1.7 million Polish citizens of various faiths and ethnicities (Polish, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish) deported from eastern Poland (Kresy) in 1940-42 to special labour camps in Siberia, Kazakhstan and Soviet Asia. Some 120,000 of these escaped through Persia in 1942 as soldiers of Anders Army and their families - and eventually made their way to the West because their pre-war homeland was consigned by the Allies to remain under the hated Soviet regime.
The circumstances of their odyssey and the tragic history of the Polish citizens under Soviet occupation during the war was hushed up by the Allies during the war to protect the reputation of the Soviet Union, an important ally in the war against the Nazis. After years of courageous suffering, followed by heroic efforts fighting at the side of the Allies in Africa, Italy and Europe, the staunchly anti-communist Polish soldiers were prevented from even participating in the Allied victory celebrations.
Unfortunately, it is only now, 60 years later and when the survivors are old and many have died, that this tragic story is being rediscovered and publicised by the descendants of the survivors. If the film and its related website can play a small role in that effort, it will have been an important achievement.
